ADP: Private Employers Added 86,000 Jobs in October

The payroll processor's monthly count shows steady hiring and firmer pay for people who switch jobs, while professional services shed workers again.

What happened

Companies outside government put 86,000 more people on payrolls last month, ADP said on Nov. 4, 2026, in its count compiled alongside the Stanford Digital Economy Lab [1]. ADP cut its earlier September tally to 86,000 from 90,000 [1]. October's gain therefore equaled September's lowered pace, and CNBC said it edged past a Dow Jones forecast of 75,000 [2].

Service firms supplied 82,000 of the gain; goods producers contributed 4,000 [1]. The biggest single sector increase, 39,000, came in trade, transportation, and utilities, with education and health services next at 28,000 [1]. Professional and business services fell by 27,000, a third consecutive monthly decline [1].

How it affects Americans

Over twelve months, typical base pay climbed 3.2%, and total pay including extras rose 4.7%, by ADP's measure [1]. Switching employers paid off: movers saw a 4.8% median raise against 3.0% for people who stayed [1]. "Employers of all sizes were hiring last month, and our data suggests that job-changers were lured by a combination of bonuses, overtime, and more hours in addition to higher base pay," said Dr. Nela Richardson, chief economist, ADP [1].

Gains reached firms of every size, led by mid-sized sites at 33,000, then small sites at 28,000, then big ones at 24,000 [1]. Regionally, the South added 47,000 positions, far ahead of the Northeast's 3,000 [1].

The Veil Press view

Our read: a modest but steady private hiring number, paired with faster raises for workers who move, suggests employers still have to compete for talent even as office-based professional work cools. Richardson said that "earnings growth for these workers hit its fastest pace since March 2024" [1].
