Justice Department Sends Election Monitors to All 50 States for the First Time

About 1,000 monitors and observers are deployed on Election Day in what the department calls its largest monitoring effort in history.

What happened

On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Justice Department said it was mounting the biggest poll-watching operation it has ever run, with approximately 1,000 election monitors and observers fanning out across the country [1]. For the first time, that coverage reaches every one of the 50 states, according to the department [1]. The Civil Rights Division is coordinating the work, and the teams draw on its own staff, other department components, the offices of U.S. attorneys and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management [1].

The department notes it has dispatched monitors under every administration since the Voting Rights Act became law in 1965 [1]. Division staff will stay in touch with state and local election officials while ballots are cast [1].

How it affects Americans

Monitors are looking at whether polling places follow the federal voting rights laws the Division enforces, among them the Voting Rights Act, the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act and the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act [1]. Voters with questions or complaints can reach the department's hotline at 1-800-253-3931, write to VEM@usdoj.gov, or file through its civil rights website [1]. Problems at a polling place should go first to local election officials, and violence or intimidation should be reported to police through 911 before the department is told [1].

The Veil Press view

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said, "Election integrity has been one of the top priorities for this Administration and this Division" [1]. Our read: a national footprint raises the stakes for how monitors conduct themselves, and the release itself frames the goal as transparency pursued "in an assertive and nondiscriminatory manner" [1].

What we know

Confirmed

  • Approximately 1,000 monitors and observers are deployed, covering all 50 states for the first time [1].
  • The Disability Rights Section enforces the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) so that voters with disabilities have equal access [1].

  • An ADA information hotline is available at 1-800-514-0301 [1].

Still being reported

  • The department published a list of jurisdictions it intends to watch, but did not give staffing counts for individual states [1].
