UK and Germany Push Long-Range Strike Project and Recommit to Ukraine
At their second Defence Ministerial Council, the two governments reported progress on Deep Precision Strike capabilities with ranges over 2,000 km and signed a Sting Ray procurement arrangement.
What happened
The UK and Germany held their second Defence Ministerial Council under the Trinity House Agreement on Monday [1]. The statement was issued by Wes Streeting, the UK's defence secretary, and Boris Pistorius, Germany's defence minister [1]. The two said they had made significant progress in defence ties since signing the agreement two years ago [1].
Their headline item was a shared long-range weapons effort, known as Deep Precision Strike, which they said is moving ahead and should reach ranges over 2,000 km within the decade [1]. Their national armaments directors also signed an Implementing Arrangement on buying Sting Ray [1].
How it affects Americans
The statement does not mention the United States. Our read: the alliance American taxpayers help underwrite gains when two of its major European members pledge more of their own capability. The ministers say they share a responsibility to strengthen the European contribution to NATO and reinforce deterrence [1].
The Veil Press view
Pledges to share Europe's defence burden are only as good as the hardware that follows, and a long-range strike weapon with a delivery date inside the decade is a concrete test [1]. The ministers have directed their teams to keep the momentum through 2027 with a focus on delivery and tangible outcomes, a standard worth holding them to [1].
